We warmly welcome volunteers of all backgrounds throughout the year. We believe everyone has something unique to offer, and encourage exchange and collaboration — the more diverse the group, the greater the opportunity for new perspectives.

Types of volunteering
One-day sharing
A single day contributing a skill or activity to the school community.
One-week project
A focused week-long contribution, any time of year.
German week
Last week of June — language and cultural exchange.
Peace & Community Week
A themed week around community-building and non-violent communication.

Family participation is at the heart of The Chestnut Tree
Families contribute not only as parents, but as active members of a shared educational community — bringing their time, skills, culture, and care to sustain something that benefits every child. Four committees welcome hands-on involvement:
Celebrations & Welcome
Welcoming new families and supporting community gatherings.
Infrastructure
Taking care of shared spaces and supporting maintenance needs.
Kitchen
Promoting a healthy, local, and sustainable food culture.

Supporting approved excursions and practical logistics.

A volunteer story
Building a greenhouse, together
Thomas Betschart, a passionate nature enthusiast, shared his expertise in permaculture and mineralogy with our students and actively engaged them in building a greenhouse — hands-on, start to finish. Visits like his continue to benefit our students for years to come.
